Reindeers called “The sixth type of domestic animals”, which belongs to reindeer herders of Khuvsgul taiga in northern Mongolia, grew in number by 117. According to last year’s census, number of reindeers reached 1,855.
The government, in order to promote minority of reindeer herders, is implementing a program on improving the life of reindeer herding community and conserving reindeers, and is allowing monthly “Taiga Reindeer Herder Benefits”. Thanks to the program, the herders now have regular income and have given up slaughtering reindeers for food. Also, the herders are more interested in raising the herds of reindeers. Herders are now able to send their children to universities, and to improve their living standards as they receive good healthcare and certain income from tourism.
