The discussion entitled “Issues on protection of Mazaalai bear” held in the Government House on April 22
The research workers of MAS’s Biological Institute and representatives from NGO “Mazaalai is proud of the Nation” delivered their reports and exchanged view at the discussion.
Mazaalai included in the list of endangered mammals in Mongolia is on the brink of extinction. This requires specially focusing on fodder and living conditions of the Gobi bear and intensifying related research works. During the discussion the participants said that the Ministry of Environment and Green Development takes step by step many-sided measures for protecting and breeding Mazaalai bear. For instance, the Ministry develops a model for the bear’s living condition, intentionally influences on climate in order to increase the amount of humidity in area where lives endangered animal, as well as takes measures for digging artesian wells, fitting springs and enriching fodder-plants.
It is considered that climate change, human activities and intensive development of mining industry negatively influences on living condition and head of few Mazaalai bears.
In 1953, hunting of Mazaalai bear was prohibited. Then the living area of the animal was taken under the State protection in 1975.
Currently, these endangered animals are living only in Mongolia. According to genetic research conducted in 2008-2011, there are totally 22 Mazaalai bears of which 8 are female and 14 are male.
