“Repertoire of epic reciters” state contest has been held in Ulaanbaatar with participation of above 20 epic reciters from all corners of Mongolia. This event aimed to enrich repertoires of epic reciters and train their new generation.

Mongolian epic is not only an art of words, but also ritual challenging musical education and ability to express of an epic reciter. In 2009, UNESCO registered the Mongolian epics in the list of intangible cultural heritage needed protection.

In 2011, the Government of Mongolia approved a national program “Mongolian epics” reflecting a policy, legal and management issues aiming to conserve and develop the Mongolian epics, promote epic reciters and pass over epics to the young generation.

The Mongolian epics had been popular among western Mongolians including bayad, durvud, uriankhai, zakhchin and torguud minorities residing in Khovd and Uvs aimags until the 70s of the last century. Outstanding epic tellers from those times could recite epics for a month period long. This tradition can be said disappeared in recent years. Only a few number persons who are children of epic reciters has preserved the old tradition of telling epics in old perfect forms and manners. Nevertheless, the protection and development of the Mongolians epics are indispensable.
