June 29 is the polling day for parliamentary and local elections. Polling stations at the national level are open from 07.00 am to 10.00 pm.
On Election day, President of Mongolia Mr Elbegdorj, Speaker of Parliament Mr Enkhbold and Prime Minister Mr Saikhanbileg and other high level officials cast their votes for the parliamentary and the Ulaanbaatar citizens’ representatives khural (city council) elections at the polling stations.
During previous parliamentary elections held in 2012, the Democratic Party won the majority of seats in the Parliament to form the incumbent government. They formed a coalition government with the Justice Coalition, which consists of the New MPRP, the MNDP, and the Civil Will-Green Party. The new coalition government was named the Government for Changes.
The Mongolian mining-based economy is facing challenges from persistent economic imbalance entailed by the fall of prices on mineral resources in the world market. The main opposition party, the Mongolian People's Party (MPP) considers that this phenomenon happens because of intra-party conflicts within the Democratic Party (DP). For this, MPP’s election platform is aiming at recovering the economy of Mongolia from the crisis. Meanwhile, the Democratic Party of Mongolia reflected in their platform issues targeting pushing forward the ongoing activities. On the other hand, Mongolian People's Revolutionary Party (MPRP) is seen as a strong rival at the 2016 Elections. As we reported before, the leader of the Mongolian People’s Revolutionary Party (MPRP) Mr Enkhbayar is a former President of Mongolia. He enjoys relatively high popularity among voters. Besides these main political forces, about ten parties, three coalitions and nearly 70 independent candidates are competing setting a record number of candidates running for the elections.
