On the 6th of June, U.S Secretary of State Mr John Kerry paid a six-hour official visit to Mongolia. He is the fifth U.S Secretary of State who visited Mongolia.
In his remarks, Mr Kerry called Mongolia as “an ‘oasis of democracy’ sitting in a tough location between Russia and China”. In late 1990s, the former U.S Secretary of State Mr James Baker named Mongolia as the third neighbor of United States as Mongolia entered the path to democratic transitions. According to observers, the speech of John Kerry is the affirmation of the supporting Mongolia’s democratic transition since the beginning.
Mr Kerry’s current visit was held at the invitation of Mr L.Purevsuren, the Mongolian Minister for Foreign Affairs. In frames of the visit, the U.S. Secretary of State Mr John Kerry held official talks with Minister of Foreign Affairs L.Purevsuren. The both sides noted the dynamic development of bilateral relations based on the comprehensive partnership relationship and regular frequency of high level visits. The parties exchanged views regarding the bilateral political, defense, economic, and regional and international partnership.
Mentioning that bilateral political and defense relations have been increasingly developing, the Mongolian Foreign Minister recognized that the trade and economic relations have been stagnating.
In past several years, a volume of Investment from USA reached USD 300 million and bilateral trade turnover amounted to USD 135 million. On September 2013, Mongolia and the United States signed an Agreement on Transparency in matters related to International Trade. The United States welcomed the December 2014 ratification of the bilateral Transparency Agreement by Mongolia’s Parliament, and the two sides also explored various ways in which to advance trade and investment relations between the United States and Mongolia. The decision to implement a second compact agreement in Mongolia would have positive and important effects on Mongolia’s development and the livelihood of Mongolia’s citizens.
As a part of his visit, Mr Kerry paid a courtesy call on the President of Mongolia Mr Ts.Elbegdorj.
In 2017 the both countries will celebrate the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations.
