Kazakhstan is chairing the UN Security Council for the first time in history. The republic will coordinate the activities of the principal organs of the world’s key international organization until January 31, 2018. Members of the UN Security Council approved the program of Kazakhstan's presidency. Non-proliferation of nuclear weapons will be one of the main discussion topics in the Security Council in January. Diplomats are noting the level of detail of the work plan. Upon Kazakhstan's initiative, for the first time in the history of the United Nations, a solemn ceremony was held to raise the flags of the six newly elected non-permanent members of the UN Security Council - Cote d'Ivoire, Equatorial Guinea, Kuwait, the Netherlands, Peru and Poland.

The UNSC Members' High-Level Thematic Debate on "Non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction: confidence-building measures" to be chaired by Nursultan Nazarbayev is scheduled for January 18. The ministerial debate "Building a regional partnership in Afghanistan and Central Asia as a model for the interdependence of security and development" will take place on January 19. A debate on the situation in the Middle East will be held on January 25. The priorities of Kazakhstan are indicated in the political address of Nursultan Nazarbayev to the UN Security Council "Kazakhstan’s Conceptual vision of to strengthen global partnership for building a safe, just and prosperous world."
