On the sidelines of the 15th Shanghai Cooperation Organization Summit and 7th BRICS Summit in Ufa, Russian Federation, President of Mongolia Mr Elbegdorj has held a meeting with Mr Ashraf Ghani, the President of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan.

President Elbegdorj expressed Mongolia’s interest to enhance traditional friendly bilateral relations with Afghanistan in new directions. He highlighted the opportunity to expand mutual relations in political, economic and humanitarian spheres. 

The bilateral relations have been expanding in peacekeeping. Since 2003, Mongolian peacekeepers have been participating in the UN Peacekeeping operations in Afghanistan and in 2010, Mongolia was officially recognized as the 45th country to contribute to the peacekeeping operations in Afghanistan under the mandate of the United Nations. 

The parties mentioned that besides peacekeeping, both countries have ample opportunities to enhance cooperation in health, education and agricultural sectors by implementing joint projects.
