The State Great Khural adopted with 84 percent votes a parliamentary draft resolution on "Some measures for ensuring a realization of the state policy on railway transportation" on Friday.
Due to strategic priorities, the issue whether to build narrow-gauge or wide-gauge railroads has been in hot debate and delayed for years.
The members of Parliament approved the resolution after a final discussion. Accordingly, new railways will be constructed with two track gauges. If negotiations on railway transportation cooperation with China are successful, narrow-gauge or 1,435 mm railroad will be built from coal processing plants to the Chinese border in Tavantolgoi--Gashuunsukhait and in Khoot--Bichigt directions whereas Arts suuri--Erdenet, Tavantolgoi--Sainshand--Baruun-Urt--Khoot--Choibalsan and Khoot—Nomrog directions will have a gauge of 1,520 mm.
