World Kidney Day is celebrated annually on the second Thursday of March globally and it has been organized in Mongolia since 2009.
A research carried out by World Health Organization indicated that diabet, high blood pressure and chronic kidney disease are considered the most common non infectious diseases throughout the world today. For example, over 600 mln people worldwide suffer from chronic kidney disease. This is the third most common noninfectious disease in Mongolia and over the last 10 years the number of patients staying in the hospital with symptoms of kidney disease has become the highest in comparison with the number of patients suffering from other noninfectious diseases.

When kidneys fail, there are three treatment choices: hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis and kidney transplantation. Today, Mongolian surgeons can carry out all these forms of treatment. In 2005 we undertook for the first time a kidney transplantation surgery in association with foreign physicians, but now we can do it on our own. Since then Mongolian kidney specialists have carried out 97 successful transplants.
Today Mongolian nephrologists are implementing nationwide projects and programmes with the help of the International Society of Nephrology on improving a treatment and on providing a better service for patients with kidney disease. In the framework of these initiatives, mongolians have celebrated this year’s World Kidney Day under the motto ‘Love your kidneys’. Due to the fact that kidney disease is becoming more common among young people, Mongolian physicians organize seminars and trainings for pupils of secondary schools to guard against this disease and to raise awareness of the importance of kidneys to overall health.
