1Q16 economy slowdown slightly from last quarter

BANGKOK, May 1 (TNA) - Thailand’s economy during the first quarter this year grew almost identically to projection made by Finance Ministry’s Fiscal Policy Office at 3 per cent. Pornpen Sodsrichai, the Bank of Thailand's director of macroeconomic and monetary policy said the slight slowdown in economy during the first quarter of this year from the last quarter of 2015 was attributed to sluggish private consumption and low income of agriculturists. Public spending and tourism industry, however, grew considerably during the period and they helped moved the national economy forward. It is projected that Thailand’s economy would recover gradually during the second half this year on the back of increased public spending on mega projects. BoT forecasts that Thailand’s gross domestic product in 2016 would grow 3.1 per cent. (TNA)
