Bahrain hosts the GCF meeting

Manama, Oct. 15 (BNA): Oil Minister Shaikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Khalifa congratulated His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa on hosting the 21st meeting of the Green Climate Fund (GCF) in the Kingdom as the first Gulf country on October 15 - 21. A wide participation of officials, countries representatives and relevant international organizations is expected from around the world to facilitate funding for the vital projects in addressing the phenomenon of climate change, according to the ministry. The minister highly valued the pioneering role played by Bahrain at the regional and international levels in addressing the phenomenon of climate change, which is currently the matter nowadays; and which has acquired the greatest interest within the discussions of the presidents and ministers during international forums and meetings. Especially as the GCF is an important financing mechanism for developing countries to implement sustainable development projects in the areas of adaptation, mitigation of climate change and fulfilment of their commitments to the Paris climate agreement. The meeting focuses on discussing the support and funding provided by the GCF to the countries, in order to assist them in implementing their climate change adaptation and mitigation projects and programs and the ways and procedures required to obtain funding. Investment opportunities for adaptation and mitigation projects for each state will also be presented during the meetings, as well as a number of panel discussions and bilateral meetings between the fund, governments and international organizations. The minister praised the tireless efforts of NOGA’s team in hosting this important event, which is a clear indication of the good reputation of the Kingdom and the tireless efforts in the areas of adaptation and mitigating of the effects of changes and fulfilment of their commitments to the Paris climate agreement. Bahrain has excelled in the international and Middle Eastern arena in the industry of conferences and specialized exhibitions, which clearly reflects Bahrain's desire to provide all kinds of support and assistance in attracting all international events. He also noted the importance of meetings between participants and specialists in this global event as a unique high-level platform for exchanging knowledge, views and experiences and taking the necessary positions towards this global climatic phenomenon. The GCF was established at the Sixteenth Conference of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in 2010. The headquarters of its secretariat is located in Songdo, Incheon, Seoul, South Korea Republic, where the fund promotes a paradigm shift towards low-emission development pathways adaptable to climate change. The GCF provides fund and support to the developing countries, in order to reduce greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions of harmful gases and to adapt to the effects of climate change. It is supervised by a board of directors of 24 members of various nationalities representing developing and equally developed countries, to help developing countries to mitigate and adapt to climate change. Projects and programs proposed by developing countries are financed while ensuring that they are managed in a transparent manner, as funds available within the GCF, as a whole, are voluntary contributions from developed countries as well as contributions from a number of developing countries.
