Battersea Power Station Chimney Hits Halfway Mark: BPSDC

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 6 (Bernama) -- Battersea Power Station Development Co (BPSDC) confirmed on Monday that the first of the four chimneys to be meticulously rebuilt in the London borough of Wandsworth has reached a level of 25m above the highest point of the wash tower brickwork. The British-based BPSDC, on behalf of Battersea Power Station shareholders, said in a statement Monday that the confirmation that the required 25m height had been achieved indicates that work would commence shortly to carefully dismantle and then rebuild the other three chimneys. "The rebuild programme is designed to ensure that the chimneys, which soar above the Grade II listed Power Station, are safeguarded for future generations to enjoy," it said. BPSDC Chief Executive Officer Rob Tincknell said reaching the halfway point on the first chimney to be rebuilt was another significant milestone for everyone involved in the redevelopment of Battersea Power Station. "We are very proud of this achievement and with work to start soon on the other three chimneys, I would like to offer the teams on site every best wish for the rest of the project," he said in the statement. The statement also said images released Monday showed the South West chimney standing 25m above the brickwork with another 10m of new chimney lying inside the brick wash tower. The South West chimney will be restored to its full height of 50m before the end of 2015. "The rebuild programme, using the same construction principles to ensure the new chimneys are rebuilt to be visually identical to the originals, will conclude in late summer 2016. "Once the rebuild work is completed, all four chimneys will be painted," it added. The Battersea Power Station is owned by a consortium of Malaysian investors comprising SP Setia, Sime Darby and the Employees' Provident Fund while the development management of the project is undertaken by BPSDC. --BERNAMA
