Bid to revive Thailand's Export Development Committee

BANGKOK, August 4 (TNA) - The private sector has proposed that the Thai government revive the Export Development Committee to systematically address Thailand's external trade issues. Speaking to journalists in Bangkok on Tuesday, after a meeting of the tripartite committee of the Thai private sector, Boonthak Wangcharoen, Chairman of the Thai Bankers’ Association, said the tripartite committee is considering to propose the revival of the Export Development Committee to the government through the Joint Public-Private Sectors Consultative Committee within the next few months. Boonthak pointed out, apart from addressing Thailand’s export problems systematically, the panel, if revived, will also help find solutions to trade barriers and boost national competitiveness. Meanwhile, Supan Mongkolsuthee, Chairman of the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI), stressed that there is a need to revive the Export Development Committee in order to boost Thai exports in both short and long- terms. According to the FTI chief, the Ministry of Commerce and other relevant agencies, including the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, are jointly responsible for supporting the country’s exports.
