BoT says trade conflict might affect Thai economy

BANGKOK, June 23 (TNA) -- The current trade spat between the United States and its trading partners might jeopardise Thailand’s economy in future, said Don Nakornthab, senior director of Bank of Thailand (BoT)’s Economic and Policy Department. Mr Don said the central bank believed that trade conflicts between the US and China along with the European Union, Canada and Mexico would prolong and affect Thailand’s export and economy in future. BoT has projected that Thailand’s export values this year would grow 9 per cent this year and 5 per cent in 2019, according to Mr Don. Not only the kingdom’ export and economy, foreign investment could affect if the trade conclict situation deteriorated, Mr Don added. Investors are increasingly worried that the US and China are heading for full-blown trade war, following US President Donald Trump’s fresh tariff announcement against China last week, and threats of more action if China retaliates.
