Cabinet accepts an economic development plan for the South

BANGKOK, Aug 22 (TNA) – The cabinet received a Southern Economic Corridor (SEC) plan worth 128 billion baht from administrators and business operators in 11 southern provinces. The plan focuses on comprehensive transport facilitation. Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusripitak said the cabinet received the plan during its special meeting in Chumphon. Under the plan, development projects were proposed for 11 southern provinces. Ranong, Chumphon, Surat Thani and Nakhon Si Thammarat provinces were designated as the important location of the Southern Economic Corridor. Southern authorities also proposed that investors be attracted to the region with promotional privileges like those implemented for the Eastern Economic Corridor. According to Mr Somkid, the southern economic development plan required the first-phase investment of 12 billion baht to improve transport networks and facilities. The tasks include promotions for water and coastal transport and a new double-track railway between Chumphon and Ranong. The railway project is to link the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea and thus benefit countries in the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC). The grouping consists of Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Thailand Bhutan and Nepal. The southern economic development plan also includes new deep-sea ports and multi-purpose ports to promote international tourism, cargo transport and fishing. (TNA)
