Cambodian PM thanks Thai government for solution to migrant workers

BANGKOK, August 9 (TNA) - Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen thanks the Thai government for implementing concrete measures to solve the problem of migrant workers, including those from Cambodia. Thai Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-ocha told journalists on August 8 that he has been reported on the appreciation note of his Cambodian counterpart. The Thai premier said he has also been informed that Phnom Penh is ready to cooperate and support the Thai government on the policy on migrant workers by opening a passport service section at the Cambodian Embassy in Bangkok. The prime minister also expressed his satisfaction with the number of migrant workers having been legally-registered in the latest round, launched by the Thai Ministry of Labour, as it has met the official target of about 800,000 totally. The prime minister announced, however, that the Thai government has no policy on extending the legal registration period of migrant workers in Thailand after Tuesday's end of the latest round, urging local employers to follow the law and act within the legal framework. In response to reports released by non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that there should be up to 2-3 million migrant workers coming out to legally register in the latest round, the Thai premier noted that he has ordered agencies concerned to look into the case.
