China Town is lively on Chinese New Year

BANGKOK, Jan 27 (TNA) - The atmosphere at Yaowarat or Bangkok’s China Town is lively today although the Chinese New Year Celebrations is not held this year as the country is still morning the passing of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej. Thais of Chinese descent set up food offerings for Chinese gods and burned golden and silver papers for the deceased. The prices of those offerings have slightly increased this year, but most people chose to buy the same offerings as they did last year. Gold shops in China Town are busy with customers purchasing gold, in particular gold ornaments as Chinese New Year gifts. Purchases of traditional Chinese costumes are also active as normal during the Chinese New Year. Qipao or traditional Chinese dress prices range from 300 baht to 1,000 baht. Most people opt for black and golden dresses rather than red ones as the black colour suits the country’s mourning atmosphere. Traders said they believed China Town or Yaowarat Road will be crowded with Thais of Chinese descent tomorrow the same as the year before. (TNA)
