Chinese firm invests $500m in Tabas coal power project

TEHRAN,Feb.23(MNA)-- A Chinese company has invested $500 million for the development of a coal-fired power plant in Tabas, central Iran,Iranian deputy energy minister announced on Wednesday, without mentioning the name of the company. Mohammad Behzad said that the power project will have a 650 megawatts capacity. The project is scheduled to be completed within 74 months, he said, adding that the administration planned to roll out 5 gigawatts (GW) of coal-fired projects accross the country. By the end of the fifth five-year economic development plan (2015), Iran will boost its electricity generation capacity by 25GW to reach 73GW, Energy Minister Majid Namjou said on February 7. The country’s electricity exports will total $1 billion by the end of this current calendar year (March 19, 2012). Iran currently trades power with Turkey, Armenia, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iraq.
