CIO Important For Business And Government

Jakarta, June 10 (Antara) - Agency for Assessment and Application of Technology (BPPT) stated that Chief Information Officers (CIO) nowadays have more important role in business and governmental institutions, particularly in implementing the use of information and communication technology (ICT). "CIOs today can no longer considered as technology experts alone, but also as figures who can invent benefits for business and government through ICT process and infrastructure," Chairman of BPPT Marzan A. Iskandar said here on Monday. He delivered the statement in the Second ASEAN CIO Forum held at the BPPT building with a theme "Shaping ASEAN Future Through e-Leadership and Collaboration". Marzan explained CIO is a position in a business organization, government, or non-profit organization that has a role as a leader in the provision of information to the survival of the organization in order to achieve its objectives. "CIOs are becoming increasingly vital in the information age where the existence of an organization is largely determined by the ability to beguile ICT," he said. According to him, the role of CIO is becoming more important in business and governance since the current role of ICT is no longer the automation, integration and supplement within an organization. However, he said, ICT has become a need, the enabler, and the transformer for the advancement of modern organizations, both in governmental organizations and business organization. "This causes ICT based resources management in governmental bodies and corporations to be more complex due to the demands of maximum user or customer needs service, efficient production process, and better decision planning," he pointed out. Therefore, Marzan argued that CIOs must be able to leverage, expand, transform, and pioneer in application of ICT. He said there are some CIO`s roles and tasks within the organization, among others to ensure data and information is properly maintained as a resource for employees and management, to socialize the use of ICT for all activities to be more efficient and transparent, to develop ICT policies and to increase the capacity of ICT infrastructure. "The development of CIO in Indonesia within this decade has proven the significance of its role and existence in organization, both the government and the corporation," Marzan said. CIO`s role, he further said, has been shown to enhance the role, capabilities, and good ICT development, focused, and aligned with the business strategy of the organization. On that occasion, Indonesia hosted the Second ASEAN CIO Forum held on 10 to 11 June 2013. The second meeting of the ASEAN CIO Forum conducted by BPPT in cooperation with the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology and supported by the ASEAN Secretariat in Jakarta, Indonesian Telematics Society (Mastel), and others. The event was attended by delegates from all ASEAN countries CIO from both the government and the business world, as well as the observer of good ICT scientist, practitioners, and profesionals in the field of 400 participants. CIOs in the ASEAN region participated in the Second ASEAN CIO Forum in order to implement ASEAN ICT Master plan 2015. The first meeting held in 2012 in Bangkok, Thailand on the topic of "ASEAN ICT Master plan in 2015". "So, through this 2013 ASEAN CIO Forum, we expect synergies, coordination, and exchange between CIO success of government agencies and businesses across ASEAN countries through sharing best practice approach," Marzan said.
