DCA Making Steady Progress In Shifting Towards CAA - Malaysian Transport Minister

SEPANG (Selangor, Malaysia), July 27 (Bernama) -- The Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) is making steady progress in shifting towards a fully autonomous and self-sustaining Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), said Transport Minister Liow Tiong Lai. He said the CAA would be responsible for overseeing Malaysia's aviation safety and security standards in ensuring they were in line with International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO)'s Strategic Objectives. "This is also well-aligned with our commitment to uphold ICAO's International Standards and Recommended Practices," he said when opening the ICAO-World Customs Organisations (WCO) Joint Conference on Enhancing Air Cargo Security and Facilitation here Tuesday. Themed "The Path of Effective Implementation", the three-day conference starting Tuesday has attracted about 300 participants from government agencies, airlines and air cargo security companies worldwide. Liow however did not mention when the shifting process would be fully completed. On another note, Liow said Malaysia was strongly committed to support ICAO's 'No Country Left Behind' (NCLB) initiative. In support of ICAO's various priority areas particularly its safety and security programmes, Malaysia pledged to contribute US$100,000 to ICAO's Africa-Indian Ocean (AFI) Safety Fund as well as another US$100,000 to the ICAO's Aviation Safety and Security Fund, he said. "Malaysia is keen and determined to continue playing an active part in achieving ICAO's aspiration for safer skies and excellent standards of civil aviation," he said. Liow at the event also announced that Malaysia would submit its candidacy to the Council of ICAO for the next elections at the 39th Session of the ICAO Assembly. "We hope our esteemed peers will endorse and support our continued membership on the Council of ICAO," he said, adding that Malaysia had consistently supported ICAO and played an active role in the aviation body since first elected to the Council in 2007. -- BERNAMA
