Demand for Thai fruits surges in Cambodia, Vietnam

CHANTABURI, THAILAND, May 26 (TNA) - Market demand for Thai fruits in neighbouring Cambodia and Vietnam has surged, especially for mangosteen and durian, causing a short of supply for the two Thai fruits. Sombat Juengtrakoon, Vice President of the Thai-Cambodia Border Tourism and Trade Association in Chantaburi Province in the Thai East, told reporters on Monday that Cambodian and Vietnamese traders have urged Thailand to speed up exporting mangosteen and durian to the two neighbouring markets as many as possible. Sombat said that Thailand, through the border market in Chantaburi, has received purchase orders for mangosteen and durian from Cambodia and Vietnam up to at least 300 tonnes per day, leading to a short of supply for the two Thai fruits for exports from Chantaburi's orchards due to late produce caused by vulnerable weather conditions and high domestic demand. According to the vice president, Chantaburi has, thus, ordered mangosteen and durian from southern Thai orchards for exports to the Cambodian and Vietnamese markets, which can partly ease the problem of their supply shortage.
