Development Of 13 Industrial Zones To Be Started In 2015

Jakarta, Dec 18 (Antara) -- The Indonesian government will commence the development of 13 industrial zones in regions outside Java in 2015. "As the project was planned during the term of the former government, it must be started immediately," the Deputy for Means and Facilities of the Ministry of National Development Planning/National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas), Deddy S. Priatna, said here on Thursday. He added that the government also plans to increase the number of industrial zones outside Java in addition to these 13. In view of that, the implementation of the project must be accelerated with every year. "We should increase their number," he stated. Priatna further noted that the development of the 13 industrial zones was aimed at establishing new growth centers outside Java to enable the spread of development and economic growth. In 2013, regional contribution to Indonesia`s Gross Domestic Product was dominated by regions in Java, which comprised 55 percent of the total, while regions in Sumatra contributed a meager 22 percent. This gap was also prevalent in the country`s Gini ratio that stood at 0.43 percent. With the development of the 13 industrial zones, economy in regions outside Java would grow and would, in turn, create new jobs, Priatna affirmed. Furthermore, Bappenas, the national development planning agency, has mapped out the infrastructural requirements to support the industrial zones, such as those in Batulicin in South Kalimantan, and Ketapang and Landak in West Kalimantan, where the supply of electricity would be increased through the development of power plants, as was revealed by Minister of National Development Planning Andrinof Chaniago. Investment for infrastructure development to support the 13 industrial zones will amount to Rp55.44 trillion, including Rp17.66 trillion for seaport development. Strategic port improvement and development is needed in Pontianak, Bitung, Makassar, Banjarmasin, Kupang, and Halmahera. Priatna pointed out that when the industrial zone development is completed, it could be followed by the development of special economic zones. The government has plans to develop eight special economic zones. "We will increase their number," he said. According to Priatna, Bapennas also plans to develop technology and innovation development zones, or technoparks, to support the development of value-adding processes in industries. Bapennas plans to build 100 technoparks in cooperation with the Technology Assessment and Application Agency (BPPT), he stated.
