DPM:EU sends positive signal to Thailand on IUU Fishing

BANGKOK, May 24 (TNA) - Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister General Prawit Wongsuwan stresses on a "positive signal" hinted by the European Union (EU) on Thailand's attempted solutions to the Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) Fishing issues. General Prawit reiterated the EU's positive signal on Tuesday, telling reporters that EU has not yet made any official announcement pending its further evaluation in Thailand next month. EU issued a "yellow card" warning to Thailand on the IUU Fishing in April 2015, urging the country to improve IUU Fishing and related human rights issues. If EU imposed a "red card" on Thailand, it could lead to its ban on Thai fishery exports to the 28-member EU market. Meanwhile, a Defence Ministry spokesman explained that a team of Thai government officials visited EU during May 17-19 to discuss with the EU side on the IUU Fishing, during which they learned on the EU's positive signal.
