Energy minister assures no power blackout

BANGKOK, May 5 (TNA) -- Although demand for electricity in Thailand this year has risen between 6-7 per cent due to hot weather, there will be no power blackout in the country, assured Energy Minister Gen Anantaporn Kanchanarat. Peak electricity consumption took place in April due to the heat in summer season but consumption did not exceed 28,500 – 29,500 megawatts projected by the Energy Ministry, said Gen Anantaporn. However, he added that figures on consumption were still high. Thanking people for using power saving equipment and their cooperation on reducing power consumption during peak hours between 2-3pm, Gen Anantaporn said there is enough electricity in reserves and the public should not worry on power blackout in Thailand. Gen Anantaporn said he would propose to the National Energy Policy Committee later this month in allowing for the “LNG Third Party Access” aimed at creating more competition in the LNG business in the country. Also, another proposal to the Committee is for fixing buying prices of electricity from small power production plants and sell it to factories located within industrial estates, he said. On some petroleum production firms in overseas laying off employees due to declining oil prices, Gen Anantaporn said he believed petroleum companies in Thailand would not resort to such practices as they would prefer to temporarily cut production and controlling other expenses. Oil prices have already surpassed critical period and should climb to between 40-50 US dollars per barrel from now, he added. (TNA)
