Ergonomic Approach Helps To Boost Productivity - NIOSH

PELABUHAN KLANG, Selangor Oct 13 (Bernama) -- Employers in the country are urged to use the ergonomic approach in the work system in a move to boost productivity. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) chairman Lee Lam Thye (right) said the approach could reduce musculoskeletal disorders, namely, an illess related to muscles, bones and nerve system among workers. "The ergonomic culture which is applied to the working place can reduce accidents, injuries, illnesses and the costs of looking after the health of the workers. "Subsequently, higher workers' productivity benefits the organisation," he told reporters after launching the programme 'Ergonomics at Workplace' here, Monday. Ergonomics is a field of science and technology aimed to adjust the usage of equipment, work place design, work surrounding and way of working in accordance with the physical and mental limit and capability of the workers. In this regard, Lee said employers should not be stingy in making investments to apply the ergonomics approach in their respective organisations. "Employers must be aware, for example, in providing office equipment including suitable furniture. The problems of bones and muscles are related to the design, arrangement and usage of various components of the furniture in the office," he said. (photoBERNAMA) -- BERNAMA
