EU-Asean Business Council Encourages Malaysia-EU FTA

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 20 (Bernama) -- The EU-Asean Business Council is encouraging Malaysia and the European Union to restart negotiations on the Malaysia-EU Free Trade Agreement. Executive Director of EU-Asean Business Council, Chris Humphrey, said the renegotiations would likely resume soon, as all existing trade negotiations would be completed under the newly-appointed EU Trade Commissioner, Cecelia Malmström. "The encouraging thing is when the new trade commissioner was appointed, she was given a mission statement to complete all negotations that we have already started. "We believe that Malaysia falls into that, and we hope that can proceed quite soon," he told reporters on the sidelines of a half-day talk on "Towards Asean Economic Community and Beyond" Thursday. The talk was organised by the EU-Malaysia Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The EU and Singapore have finalised their negotiations on FTA recently. Besides Malaysia, the EU also negotiating the trade agreements with Vietnam and Thailand. "We favour trade liberalisation and want to see trade barriers broken down. Therefore, we also favour putting in place a trade agreement between the EU and Asean," said Humphrey. -- BERNAMA
