EU educates Thais on GMO regulations

NONTHABURI, THAILAND, September 9 (TNA) - The European Union (EU) has sent genetically modified organisms (GMOs) experts to train Thai business operators and academics on how to prevent exports of products contaminated with GMOs. The training session was organised at a hotel on the outskirts of Bangkok on Tuesday, in which Thai exporters, academics and other concerned parties participated. The workshop focused on the EU’s laws and regulations on exports of GMO products to the 28-member European trade bloc and information on the EU’s efficient monitoring and examining technology for GM plants. The training followed an earlier EU warning on papaya exports from Thailand suspected of GMO contamination, prompting the EU to send its experts to the Thai Kingdom to inspect laboratories and to propose long-term Thailand-Eu cooperation on the issue through jointly organised workshops on GMOs.(TNA)
