FDA to strictly implement trans fat ban in Jan

BANGKOK, July 18 (TNA) – The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will strictly implement the trans fat ban when it is put into effect next year. The Public Health Ministry announcement, published in the Royal Gazette on Friday bans the production, imports and sale of partially hydrogenated oils. The ban, which will be put in effect on January 9 is aimed to promote health of consumers as trans fatty acid, contained in those oil can increase risk of heart and coronary diseases. The FDA will monitor and inspect manufacturing and selling places and imports of potentially trans fat-laden foods. Violators will face legal action. Wanchai Sattayawuthipong, secretary-general of the FDA board said that the FDA has worked continuously to solve this problem and trans fat is the global issues. He said many food producers have already reformulated their food products to eliminate trans fatty acid. (TNA)
