First lot of imported raw palm oil arrives in Thailand

BANGKOK, January 30 (TNA) - The first lot of 9,000 tonnes of imported palm oil has arrived in Thailand, while the rest of 41,000 tonnes are expected to arrive in the Kingdom within the next two weeks, as planned by the government. The Public Warehouse Organisation (PWO), under the Thai Ministry of Commerce, reported on Friday that the first lot of the imported raw palm oil arrived in Thailand on January 29. PWO said it has immediately distributed the imported raw palm oil to 11 refineries being members of the Thai Palm Oil Refinery Association, where refined palm oil will then be bottled for sales to consumers nationwide at the retail price of no higher than 42 baht per bottle as regulated by the Department of Internal Trade, also under the Ministry of Commerce. PWO announced that the bottled palm oil will be available on retail shelves as of January 31. PWO Board Chairperson Jintana Chaiyawannakarn told journalists that she believes the rest of 41,000 imported raw palm oil will arrive in Thailand in due course, by mid-February, to sufficiently meet domestic demand, urging the public not to, thus, be worried or hoard the product. The Cabinet recently approved PWO's short-term imports of a total of 50,000 tonnes of raw palm oil by mid-February to serve domestic demand pending new yields of locally-grown raw plam nuts, expected by the first quarter of this year.
