Fortinet Urges Vigilance When Shopping Online

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 19 (Bernama) -- Cybersecurity solutions firm, Fortinet, has urged Malaysian holiday shoppers to stay vigilant when shopping online. Country Manager for Fortinet Malaysia, Michelle Ong said this is given the rise in identity theft, malware, phishing and scam sites. "Online holiday shoppers will become the perfect target for cyber criminals if they get too carefree about their online safety," she said in a statement Monday. Based on an e-Commerce report released by Nielsen, Malaysians are ranked among the world's most avid online shoppers, with 58 per cent preferring to make online purchases. Fortinet outlined three top security tips for Malaysians to remember when shopping online, namely practice safe shopping such as tracking bank and credit card statements. Other security tips include, thinking twice before buying connected devices and be aware of emerging threats. Ong said while the payment card industry had established standards to protect consumers, there was no way to evaluate the security deployed by an online merchant. "We need to take the time to educate ourselves, our friends and family about how to shop online more carefully and safely," she added. -- BERNAMA
