Four Electricity Agencies of Thailand to Jointly Develop Supply in SEZs

BANGKOK, Oct 11 (TNA) - Four state-run electricity agencies of Thailand will jointly prepare a power supply development plan to cater to ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) and firms to be located in government-sponsored special economic zones (SEZs) along Thai borders with neighbouring countries, said Twarath Sutabutr, director-general of Energy Policy and Planning Office. Mr. Twarath said in his capacity as chairman of the working committee responsible for developing Thailand’s electricity system that his office would cooperate with the EGAT Public Co., Ltd., the Metropolitan Electricity Authority and the Provincial Electricity Authority in preparing the plan. He said that the plan would be divided into two parts including ASEAN Power Grid which requires a construction of 500-kilowatt transmission system or boosting the capacity of power transmission with Thailand’s neighbouring countries and a development of power system for SEZs in six areas bordering Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos and Malaysia. Also, Mr. Twarath said the plan requires a transmission development with Thailand’s twin cities to facilitate power purchase. This plan, however, still needs more study on the possibility of transmitting of power through the existing networks. (TNA)
