GPIC's President named IFA President

Manama, May 27 (BNA): The Gulf Petrochemical Industries Company (GPIC)'s President Dr. Abdulrahman Jawahery has been named President of the International Fertilizer Industry Association (IFA). It is the first in 30 years that an Arab national has been elected to head the international body, representing the global fertilizer industry on issues related to the promotion of plant nutrients, improvement of the operating environment of member companies and the collection and compilation of industry information. This is also the second time in the history of the 83 year old IFA that an Arab national has been named its President, after the then Chairman of the Petrochemical Industries Company of Kuwait, the late Dr. Abdel Baqi al-Nuri, headed the organization in 1985. The appointment is testimony to the impeccable reputation enjoyed by GPIC within the global fertilizer industry, its Bahraini cadres, good governance, and excellence in creativity and performance, which has made the Company as one of the most import in the region. In a statement, Dr. Jawahery expressed great pride and happiness at the appointment. He said it was a statement demonstrating IFA’s confidence in the advancement of the Petrochemical Industry in the Arab world in general and the Gulf region in particular reflecting the global confidence in the Arab leadership cadres and their competence in handling specialized positions at international institutions. Dr. Jawahery said the appointment would increase the multifarious responsibilities placed on GPIC and all its employees to enhance sustainability, not only in Bahrain, but on a global scale. He stressed this was an honour and appreciation of the outstanding success achieved by GPIC within the Petrochemical Industry, as well as an honour for Bahrain and its citizens, who have for long enjoyed a very high reputation among the global community. The President praised the wise policies of the Company’s Board of Directors under the Chairmanship of H.E Shaikh Isa bin Ali Al Khalifa and said this was the reason for GPIC maintaining a steady growth in sales, as well as adhering to high standards of safety, occupational health and the environment, as well as a commitment and flexibility in dealing with the rapidly changing global markets. Dr. Jawahery, who holds a Ph.D in Engineering and a Master's Degree in Chemical Engineering from London, and is a fellow member of the British Institute of Chemical Engineers; pledged to continue working with his colleagues at IFA to further develop the work systems and promote the exchange of experiences as well as contributing to developing new innovative ideas and successful programmes. An Engineer of repute and an Environmental Specialist, Dr. Jawahery has a proven track record since he has held top positions in local, regional and global organizations. He is a Board Member of the Bahrain’s NOGA Holding Company, the National Oil and Gas Authority and a member of the Supreme Council for Youth and Sports. At the regional level, Dr. Jawahery is currently a Board Member at the Gulf Petrochemical and Chemicals Association and Chairman of its Responsible Care Committee. He is also a prominent and influential figure in the Petrochemical Industry on a global scale and was recently appointed President of the Arab Fertilizers Association (AFA). He is a Member of the United States’ National Safety Council and on its Strategic Committee. Chairman of Injaz Bahrain since 2010, a life Member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, the British Council for Engineering, the Bahrain Society of Engineers and the Bahraini Association for Strategic Planning, Dr. Jawahery takes keen interest in empowering women and caring for childrens’ needs, in addition to technical and economic affairs, industries, management science, training and knowledge. Since taking over as President of GPIC, Dr. Jawahery focused on application of safety standards in all operation, production and export stages, as well as on the training and development programmes on an ongoing basis. Dr. Jawahery has been known to encourage and build confidence amongst Bahraini youngsters and give them various opportunities to assume responsibilities within the Company. This has led to GPIC’s high level of Bahrainisation and the occupation of Bahrainis in leadership positions. IFA is one of the largest unions concerned with fertilizers and has a membership of 540 companies worldwide. Dr. Jawahery was earlier IFA’s Vice-President and a member of its executive body in addition to heading its Technical Committee from 2006 up to 2009. He was also Chairman of the Finance Committee from June 2011 to May 2013.
