India's Fastest Growing Mart For Smartphones In Asia-Pacific

By Saraswathi Muniappan NEW DELHI (India), Nov 28 (Bernama) -- India is the fastest-growing market for smartphones in Asia-Pacific, with Samsung having the largest share of 24 per cent in the country, said International Data Corp (IDC). India recorded a quarter-on-quarter growth of 27 per cent in third quarter 2014 (July – September), it said in a statement. "The market observed exceptional growth owing to festive demand and recorded a new high in smartphone shipments in third quarter 2014. "As a result, the Indian smartphone market outshone other emerging markets in the Asia-Pacific region in terms of quarter-over-quarter growth," it said. The overall mobile phone market stood at 72.5 million units in third quarter 2014, which was a 15 per cent quarter-on-quarter growth and a nine per cent year-on-year growth, it said. It said out of the overall mobile phone, 23.3 million were smartphones, while the remaining 49.2 million were feature phones. IDC said the third-quarter results revealed the second consecutive quarter of more than 80 per cent year-on-year shipment growth for smartphones, reflecting robust end-user demand for the category in the devices market in India. It said with 24 per cent market share Samsung continued to be the market leader in the smartphone segment in India, followed by Micromax (20 per cent), Lava (eight per cent), Karbonn (eight per cent), Motorola (five per cent) and other brands (36 per cent). On the outlook, it said, shipment growth in third quarter was largely a result of festive demand. IDC said it expected the trade to hold sufficient inventory leading to a lesser intake in fourth quarter 2014. "Based on these observations, the short-term outlook of the market remains neutral." it said. --BERNAMA
