Indonesia Coffee Festival To Hold World Barista Championship

Jakarta, Oct 13 (Antara) - The Indonesia Coffee Festival (ICF) will organize the World Barista Championship for professionals in the industry on October 17-19, 2014, at the Inna Grand Bali Hotel in Sanur, Bali. Tuti Mochtar, a member of ICF 2014`s Steering Committee, stated here on Monday that the World Barista Championship will apply the international standards of coffee making. "The game`s rule is that a barista must be able to make and serve four cups of espresso, four cups of cappuccino, and four cups of signature drink for the four sensory judges within 15 minutes," she explained. During the coffee-making process, the head judge will also rate the technique used by the participants. "The participants are not just coming from Indonesia, but also the baristas who won the local competitions in Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, and Thailand," she revealed. As per the ICF committee`s target, only 20 baristas will participate in the championship, and as of now, six foreign participants have been listed. "Those who will participate are the professional baristas," she remarked. In Indonesia alone, Tuti noted that the number of professional baristas had increased rapidly as compared to three years ago. With regard to the technical knowledge and understanding of coffee, the Indonesian baristas were at par or even better than the other baristas from the ASEAN member countries, Tuti explained. "At this time, only some tourism schools have included the curriculum about coffee. In fact, the demand for professional baristas will increase following the increasing trend in coffee consumption in Indonesia," she emphasized. The World Barista Championship is an integrated event with the ICF that features a coffee exhibition, business matchmaking, coffee auction, roasting workshop, brewing workshop, coffee SPA, Kintamani coffee plantation visit, and art performances.
