Indonesia Still Lagging Behind In Furniture Exports

Semarang, C. Java, Aug 22 (Antara) - Indonesia is still lagging behind a number of other Asian countries in furniture exports. In 2013, Indonesia was the 18th largest exporter of furniture in the world falling from the position of the 13th in 2012. In 2013, the country`s exports of furniture were valued at US$1.8 billion , data at the Central Bureau of Statistics said. Indonesia produces and exports wooden, metal, rattan and plastic furniture, the agency said. Indonesia is still way behind China , the world largest exporter of furniture with exports valued at US$52 billion a year, Vietnam, the 7th largest, with exports of US$5.3 billion and Malaysia the 11th largest with exports of US$2.3 billion. Indonesia is behind Vietnam and Malaysia although the country is much richer in basic materials with cheaper labor, the association of wooden furniture producers (AMKRI) said. "The basic material are available in abundance in almost all areas in the country," chairman the Semarang branch of AMKRI Moelyono Hardo Atmodjo said here on Friday . Moelyono, however, said he he is optimistic the country`s exports of furniture would increase in the coming years. In the next four years, exports could be increased to US$4 billion, he said.
