Institute Calls For Action To Address Issue Of Lack Of Human Capital In Banking Sector

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 1 (Bernama) -- All players in the banking sector, including the government, need to address the issue of the lack human capital as the sector is currently undergoing a serious challenge in attracting talent, said Asian Institute of Chartered Bankers (AICB). Its chief executive, Tay Kay Luan, said the country's banking sector has grew tremendously over the past 10 years and this has caused imbalance in the supply and demand of talent. He said among the positions that the industry lacked now were mostly in the specialised areas like information technology management in risk, audit and forensic, as well as positions for senior leadership. "The internalisation of banks in their business operations, be it via merger and acquisition, setting up of new subsidiary and so forth, has created huge career opportunities. "The sector grew so fast that the supply is not able to keep up with the demand. Therefore, the demand is always exceedingly high," he told reporters after the 6th graduation ceremony of The Financial Sector Talent Enrichment Programme (FSTEP) here Wednesday. AICB chairman, Azman Hashim, presented the scroll to graduates. FSTEP, established in September 2007, is managed by AICB with the main objective of providing training programmes that emphasise talent development in human capital. Tay said FSTEP's initiatives could help boost the supply of human capital not only in the banking sector, but also to other sectors as the participants were exposed to the conditions similar to working world. FSTEP is currently embarking on a rebranding exercise to further enhance its training programme in line with the objectives of enriching talents and keeping abreast with the ever-changing talent requirements in the financial services industry. --BERNAMA
