IP Protection Can Drive More Investments Into AEC : MyIPO

KUALA LUMPUR, May 7 (Bernama) -- The harmonisation of intellectual property (IP) protection can drive more investments into the integrated Asean Economic Community (AEC). The Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO) said protecting, valuing and respecting IP is vital and its harmonisation will lead to more businesses activities in the AEC with a combined population of more than 600 million. "We foresee IP generating more income for the community, with greater foreign direct investments to member states when IP matters get harmonised. "An effective IP system of governance and regulatory will help facilitate foreign investments," said its Deputy Director General, Abdul Aziz Ismail. He was speaking at a media briefing on MyIPO's plan to organise the Global Intellectual Property Valuation Conference (GIPVC) 2015. MyIPO Thursday announced the return of the biennial conference here from June 8-10, with an ASEAN centric theme, "Ideas2Value: Accelerate ASEAN". Abdul Aziz said the GIPVC 2015 has an ASEAN focus in support of Malaysia's chairmanship of the regional grouping this year. "The GIPVC 2015 will accelerate the ideas economy by leveraging on innovations and creativity as well, to drive economic growth and create significant technological advances for the ASEAN community," he added. Another strategic thrust for the GIPVC 2015 is to commercialise and capture the value of IP as the new asset class. According to Abdul Aziz, the event will be an excellent platform for communal conversations and dialogue between the private and public sectors on the diverse and emerging issues as well as challenges, encountered by industry players in the ASEAN IP community. -- BERNAMA
