Iran’s gasline export to Iraq to increase by 2017

Tehran, Feb 2, IRNA – With the establishment of the second pipeline to conduit Iran’s gas to Iraq which passes through Shalamche-Basra route, the capacity of Iran’s gas exports to Iraq will increase in the next two years. Iran will export gas to Iraq through the two directions of Baghdad and Basra, construction of pipeline of the first route is nearing completion and it is expected that gas exports through it will start as of the month of Ordibehesht next year (April/May 2015). According to the schedule, at first 4 million cubic meters of gas is planned to be exported through the pipeline to power plants in Baghdad on daily basis which will be increased to 25 million cubic meters per day. Azizollah Ramezani, Director of the International Affairs of the National Iranian Gas Company says about 7 km of the gas pipeline to Iraq on Baghdad route has been remained within the Iraqi territory which will be completed soon. The second plan for gas exports to Iraq will be implemented through Basra with a final capacity of 35 million cubic meters per day. According to the officials of the National Iranian Gas Company the total volume of gas exports from Iran to Iraq through the two Baghdad and Basra routes has the capacity to be increased to 70 million cubic meters per day. The notable point in the gas exports to Iraq is that contrary to Pakistan which has avoided to abide by its commitment for the establishment of gas pipeline, Iraq has shown more enthusiasm for receiving gas from Iran and even prior to the signing of the contract has prepared the preliminaries inside its territory for receiving gas through Basra. Meanwhile, a gas official says the $1.5 billion tender for building the pipeline and related installations for export of gas from Iran to Iraq will be implemented through B.O.T soon. Alireza Gharibi further remarked that one year has been considered for the implementation of the pipeline and pressure control posts and two years for implementation of gas compression facilities.
