Iran to become a major transit route in region

Tehran, April 9, IRNA – Iran aims to become a major transit route in region, Deputy Managing Director of Iranˈs Railway, Hossein Ashouri said on Wednesday. Speaking to IRNA, he noted that Iran is keen to increase its share of Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) annual transit capacity. ˈSome 460 million tons of goods are transited among ECO member states while Tehran is determined to boost its share by developing its railroads,ˈ Ashouri underlined. He added that transit development among ECO member states would benefit all. ˈMany central Asian traders are keen to transit their goods via Iran, particularly after the ease of sanctions,ˈ the official reiterated. Tehran has been seeking expansion of cooperation and interactions with its neighbors, especially the Central Asian republics, in the recent decades.
