Iran Envoy Calls For Reforms In UN Economic Policies

New York, Oct 26, IRNA - A senior Iranian UN envoy said here on Friday that Tehran believes that imposing economic sanctions, as an instrument of political and economic pressure on developing countries, is in clear violation of international law and contrary to the purposes and principles derived from the UN Charter. Addressing the second committee meeting of the United Nations General Assembly on Friday, Iran’s Deputy Permanent Representative at the UN Gholam-Hossein Dehqani emphasized that this approach runs counter to the peace, development and security of sovereign states, the right of nations in trade, free shipping and the multilateral trading system. He stressed that the independence of countries in trade policy should not serve as a justification for their economic pressure on other countries. Iran believes that imposing economic sanctions as a tool of intimidation and political pressure would seriously undermine the legitimacy of the international system arising from the UN Charter, Dehqani said./end
