Iran, Nigeria Call For Enhanced Agricultural Cooperation

Tehran, Sept 23, IRNA – Deputy Minister of Agricultural Jihad Khalil Aqaei and visiting Nigerian Parliament's head of the Agriculture Commission, Mohammad Taher Mongono, on Monday held talks on ways to expand bilateral cooperation on agriculture. During the meeting held in the Iranian Agriculture Jihad Ministry, Aqaei called for implementation of the agreements already signed by Iran-Nigeria Joint Economic Commission. Fertile lands and existing potentials make up for Iran and Nigeria to develop agricultural cooperation, Aqaei said. Aqaei said that Iran enjoys enormous expert, technical and scientific capacities in the field of agriculture and voiced the country's readiness to help the friendly and Muslim Nigeria develop agricultural industry. He said that the Islamic Republic of Iran is ready to train Nigerian experts either in Iran or Nigeria and facilitate their visits to Iranian research centers. The Nigerian side, for his part, said that his country is highly dependant on oil revenues. Mongono said that Nigeria is seeking to get rid of single-product economy and diversify its income resources. "We are looking for food security in Nigeria and therefore, want to focus on agriculture," he said, stressing the need to establish close relationship with Iran in the field of agriculture./end
