Iran official: 90% of rural roads asphalted

Tehran, Nov 24, IRNA - Iran's deputy roads and urban development minister for rural affairs said that around 90 percent of rural roads have been asphalted since the victory of Islamic Revolution. Hossein Mir-Shafiei made the statement in the inaugural ceremony of two rural roads in Asara District of Karaj, Alborz province, adding that about $1.6b are required to renovate and re-asphalt all rural roads The official noted that 1.5m rural people do not have access to proper roads, adding that 17,000 km of rural roads are to be renovated and re-asphalted during the tenure of the current government. Referring to the importance of roads located in the Alborz province, Mir-Shafiei said that with the construction of new rural roads by June 2014, a number of problems facing the provincial residents and tourists will also be resolved. Elsewhere, the Roads and Urban Development Minister Abbas Akhoundi said earlier that Iran is to build 3,000 km of rural roads by March 20, 2015. Akhoundi added that 900 km of roads have been re-asphalted. In January, Mir-Shafiei said the government has allocated $38.33m for asphalting rural roads in the budget bill of the year ending March 2015. “If the fund is fully allocated, we will be able to asphalt 1 kilometer of road in each village,” he said./end
