Iran's Electricity Exports Rise

Tehran, Sept 25, IRNA - Iran exported 5,566.9 gigawatt-hours of electricity to neighboring countries during March 21-September 22, 2014. The figure indicates a 2.66 percent growth compared with that of the corresponding period of last year which was 5,422.9 gigawatt-hours. In this period, Iran’s electricity imports fell by 7.12 percent year-on-year to amount to 1,745.5 gigawatt-hours. Last year’s figure was 1,879. Iran exchanges electricity with Armenia, Pakistan, Turkmenistan, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Nakhchivan, Iraq and Afghanistan. In January, Homayoun Haeri, the managing director of Iran Power Generation Transmission & Distribution Management Company, said Iran is currently the biggest electricity producer in the Middle East. Haeri added that Iran’s total electricity generation currently stands at 70,000 megawatt-hours. Earlier, Zaman Hosseini, managing director of Tehran Regional Electric Company, said Iran ranks 1st and 14th in the Middle East and the world respectively in electricity production.
