Japan eyes to invest in Thailand's mega-projects

BANGKOK, February 3 (TNA) - Japan is interested in investing in high-speed railway projects, linking Bangkok with Rayong Province in the Thai East and Bangkok with Hua Hin resort area in Prachuap Khiri Khan Province in the Upper Thai South, as well as a Thai aircraft maintenance center at U-Tapao Airport in Rayong. Thai Transport Minister Arkhom Termpittayapaisith told journalists that the Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry has expressed the interest in, probably, joint ventures with Thai investors. Arkhom said relevant officials are also studying details of another high-speed railway to Chiang Mai Province in the Thai North, with results of the study set to be first presented to the Thai Cabinet in mid-2016 and the final one in late this year, while its construction is expected to start in 2018. Arkhom acknowledged that Japan's All Nippon Airways has also expressed its interest in joint investment with the Thai side for the construction of an aircraft maintenance facility at U-Tapao Airport in Rayong, with its feasibility study having been concluded and to be soon presented to the Thai Cabinet. Besides, the minister revealed, Japan has expressed its interest in operating the Red Line electric railway and constructing more electric railways in Bangkok and double track railways in the country. According to the Thai transport minister, his ministry plans 10 new electric railways and the Office of Transport and Traffic Policy and Planning will start to study the projects over the next couple of months, with the studies set to be concluded within a year.
