Japanese Investment In Malaysia Expected To Remain Encouraging: Minister

From Christine Lim OSAKA, Nov 26 (Bernama) -- Japanese investment in Malaysia is expected to remain encouraging with strong prospects in the markets for halal products, internet and nursing care of eldery people. Malaysian International Trade and Industry Minister Mustapa Mohamed said Japanese investors are still keen to invest in Malaysia due to the close relations between the two countries. “Malaysia and Japan's relationship is growing stronger with the second wave of the Look East Policy,” he said during a seminar on business opportunities in Malaysia. Under the second wave of the Look East Policy, he said, the focus areas of collaboration with Japan include cutting-edge technologies, new innovations and high-tech skills development. “Japan is still an important foreign investor for Malaysia,” Mustapa said. In 2014, Japan was Malaysia’s third largest trading partner and third largest export destination. It is also the third largest import source for Malaysia. “Japanese companies were the largest investor in Malaysia with 1,400 companies including large corporations such as Toyota and NEC Corporation,” he said. He stressed the need to maintain Malaysia’s visibility in Japan to maintain strong trade and investment relations. Mustapa is following the Malaysian Investment Development Authority's (MIDA) trade and investment mission to Japan which began Wednesday and ends on Nov 27. He was also in Osaka Wednesday to witness a Memorandum of Understanding signing between MIDA and Kyushu Economy International (KEI), a Japanese trade and economic organisation, on bilateral co-operation between Kyushu province and Malaysia. -- BERNAMA
