JCCI Head Asks Suu Kyi to Upgrade Myanmar Infrastructure

Naypyidaw, Myanmar, Jan. 27 (Jiji Press)--Visiting Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry Chairman Akio Mimura met with de facto Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi on Friday, requesting the Southeast Asian nation to improve its social infrastructure. To encourage Japanese companies to increase investment and expand their presence in Myanmar, it will be necessary for the country to improve such infrastructure as power supply and transportation systems, Mimura said during the meeting in Naypyidaw, Myanmar's capital. He also sought the establishment of legal systems on investment and customs clearance and their transparent operations. Mimura became the first leader of a Japanese business organization to meet with Suu Kyi, who serves as state counsellor and foreign minister, since her administration was launched in spring last year. Many Japanese companies are highly interested in doing business in Myanmar with high growth potential and the Japanese business circle will continue making contribution to the country's economic development through direct investment and technical assistance, Mimura told Suu Kyi. He also stressed that it will be important for her country to foster small businesses and develop human resources to build the foundation for growth. In addition, Mimura called for the creation of a framework of regular talks between the Myanmar government and the Japanese business circle. END
