JETRO satisfied with Thailand's investment promotion

TOKYO, July 3 (TNA) - The Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) has expressed its satisfaction with the Thai government's moves to facilitate bilateral trade and promote foreign investment, while Thai Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-ocha has asked JETRO to support Thai products, especially farm produce. On the occasion of Prime Minister General Prayut's visit to Japan to participate in the 7th Mekong-Japan Summit in Tokyo from July 2-4, Deputy Government Spokesman Major General Werachon Sukhondhapatipak told TNA that JETRO Chairman Hiroyuki Ishige paid a courtesy call on the Thai leader at his hotel on Friday morning (local time), during which Ishige expressed the appreciation. The deputy spokesman said the JETRO chairman also reported support for Thai investors in Japan, resulting from a memorandum of cooperation (MOC) that JETRO earlier signed with Thailand's Joint Standing Committee on Commerce, Industry and Banking during the Thai prime minister’s previous visit to Japan in February 2015. The deputy spokesman stressed that the JETRO chair thanked the Thai prime minister for his government’s efforts to clear trade barriers and promote foreign investment in Thailand. The deputy spokesman revealed that JETRO and the Thai Ministry of Transport are cooperating on connectivity projects, as Thailand is expanding transport networks and special economic zones in the region. According to the deputy spokesman, investment in Thailand is investment in the region, while the new Tokyo Strategy 2015 is aimed to develop the region into a sustainable production base of Japan. Besides, the Thai prime minister asked JETRO to support bilateral trade, as Thailand is trying to boost exports of farm products and promote local cooperation in many areas, and sought JETRO's support for the further development of Thai business operators and technological and knowledge transfer in order to enhance Thailand's business competitiveness, especially in relation to the country's new special border economic zones, and the development of local workers’ skills.
