Malaysia To Get Breeder Deer From Australia

MELBOURNE (Australia), April 2 (Bernama) -- The Australian government has finalised market access conditions to send Australian breeder deer to Malaysia, and breeder sheep and goats to the Philippines. Minister for Agriculture, Barnaby Joyce, said the government remained focused on opening new markets, and re-establishing existing markets, for Australian exporters. Joyce said in a statement, the Malaysian breeder deer market, along with the Philippines breeder goat and sheep markets, represents a good opportunity for exporters in this niche, low volume, high value sector of the market. "I understand the first consignment of breeder deer (to Malaysia) under these new market access conditions is ready and waiting to go. "Australian government veterinary authorities have now reached agreement on animal health certification requirements with Malaysia and the Philippines which provides a basis upon which the trade can occur. "If it's protein and walks on four legs or hops on two and is bigger than a guinea pig, then, we are going to try to find a market for it," he added. Joyce said finding both major and niche markets has been a major priority for Australia, and had delivered a number of market opportunities for Australian exports in the past year, including Lebanon, Bahrain, Egypt, Iran, Cambodia and Thailand for slaughter cattle. Australia recently announced a new market in Peru for kangaroo meat. --BERNAMA
