Malaysia Has Potential To Export Belgium's Halal Medical Products - Minister

By Rosemarie Khoo Mohd Sani and Nuramalina Ebrahim KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 24 (Bernama) -- Malaysia could be the launching pad in exporting halal medical products using technology from Belgium, particularly to the Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC) countries. Deputy Health Minister Dr Hilmi Yahaya said Malaysia, which controls about 90 per cent of the halal medical market in the OIC countries, had the advantage to grow further if given the opportunity to collaborate with Belgian experts in the field. "Malaysia through the Department of Standards Malaysia has recently obtained international halal certification from Turkey which is also recognised by the 57 OIC countries. "We, at the medical sector, are encouraging our Belgian counterpart to come here and produce their products in Malaysia so that we can export them to the OIC countries," he told Bernama. He said this on the sidelines of a seminar held in conjunction with the Belgium Economic Mission to Malaysia here Monday. He further said that Malaysia was also eyeing to collaborate with Belgium in terms of providing training for Malaysian medical specialists. "We are currently lacking in medical specialists, so we can use this opportunity to learn from their high technology and advancement in the medical sector," said Dr Hilmi. --BERNAMA
