Malaysia, Indonesia To Discuss Wage Raise For Indonesian Maids

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 7 (Bernama) -- A Malaysia-Indonesia joint working group meeting will be held on Oct 15 and 16 in Jakarta to find a solution to issues faced by Indonesian domestic workers in Malaysia. Indonesian Ambassador to Malaysia, Herman Prayinto said among issues to be be discussed were the demand for higher wages for maids in Malaysia. "Yes, we will discuss better wages. The meeting will also focus on the delivery mechanisms for the domestic workers and their welfare here," he told reporters at the 14th ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community Meeting here Wednesday. In May, Indonesia had sent a memorandum to the Malaysian Government, requesting the minimum US$166 (RM700) wage per month be raised to US$285 (RM1,200) for Indonesian maids in Malaysia. The proposal was made in an effort to make the services of domestic maids in Malaysia more competitive and help curb the influx of illegal immigrants. The wage increase was however, opposed by a majority of people in this country. -- BERNAMA
